Virtual Talk with Artist/Adventurer, Christy Georg: Contemporary Sailor Sculpture

at Mystic Seaport Museum this Thursday, Jan 7 at 3:00 EST. Free, register HERE

Christy Georg has a BFA and MFA in sculpture, teaches, and has worked as a deckhand aboard schooners, thru-hiked the Pacific Crest and Colorado Trails, and cruised the Arctic. Endurance, fortitude, and exploration are underlying themes in her work and life. In this virtual talk, Christy will discuss the relationship between the “Sailor Made” exhibition currently on display at Mystic Seaport Museum and her “Nautical Body” of sculpture, performance, and drawings. "Sailing forced me to live the life of my subject - living and working on schooners, and later my own sailboat. This training instilled a rare insight into the ‘dying art’ of maritime culture, practical techniques, and crafts, which inspire the work. I love history and research, which I funnel into my pieces; meticulous craftsmanship lends them authority as functional or historical objects, which upon inspection are quite absurd or uncanny!" Participants will have an opportunity to ask Christy questions after the talk.

An exhibition of artworks that are manually operated, mechanical, or otherwise interactive or address previous "heights of technology” with the benefit of hindsight. This exhibition, following the blockbuster Currents New Media Festival takes a step backwards. Artworks displayed range from an interpretation derived from very simple but ancient innovations such as the pencil and weight driven toys to more engineered and complicated wind driven sculptures.
